Economic Freedom Fighters member of Parliament (MP) Mbuyiseni Ndlozi reiterated his scorn of the Springbok rugby team on Tuesday afternoon and said there would be no racial unity in South Africa until wealth was shared equally and land returned to those from whom it was taken.
Ndlozi, in a debate in Parliament on a motion to congratulate the Springboks for winning the Rugby World Cup, said calls to rally behind the team was a form of collective abuse of black people, who were being asked to sanctify a sport and a symbol that remained redolent of white supremacy.
Other political parties chose rather to celebrate the Springboks for the way they'd unified the country with their triumph in Japan.
Wearing her springbok jersey, Heloïse Jordaan of the Freedom Front Plus said the Bok team had done its part to give South Africa hope and to promote nation building. "And now everyone in the country must build on that," she said.
The DA's Natasha Mazzone also donned a Springbok jersey and told Parliament that this squad of gentle giants had rescued the country from a path of hate that some were attempting to lead us down, and brought South Africa back together.
