Police make breakthrough in so-called FB marketplace gang

Police in Tshwane shot and wounded one man and arrested his 10 accomplices believed to be part of the so-called "Facebook Marketplace" gang.

Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo says the suspects were arrested on Friday when they were about to rob a man whom they had lured by advertising a truck for sale.

He says crime intelligence received a tip-off and mobilised a team to Winterveld where a shootout between the suspects and officers broke out.

One suspect was shot and injured while 10 others were arrested without injuries.

Police also recovered two unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

In April, a similar incident happened in Winterveld when another man responded to a post on Facebook Marketplace where a truck was advertised for R100 000.

The complainant was given a location to meet the seller and upon his arrival, he was approached by two men, one of whom was armed.

The complainant, who was also armed, drew his firearm and shot the armed suspect while his accomplice fled on foot.

According to police, the complainant was assisted by community members who called the police.

The wounded suspect was arrested for attempted armed robbery and the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Police reiterated their call for the public, to do more research on sellers and to visit their private profiles to check for red flags.

Buyers should also rather meet in public places near a police station.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
