Police have arrested four suspects they believe are behind a spate of armed robbers of people who are followed home from OR Tambo International Airport.
The men, one of who was shot, were arrested following a high-speed chase and shoot-out in Alexandra Township on Thursday morning.
The national police commissioner, General Kehla Sitole, welcomed the arrests which were carried out by members of the National Investigation Unit, the Flying Squad and members from OR Tambo International Airport.
He said the suspects were allegedly planning a robbery when "our team pounced on them as they were changing the number plates on their sedan".
Three suspects managed to flee, initiating a high-speed chase and a shoot-out between the suspects and the police before the suspect’s vehicle swerved off the road, crashing to a halt.
"Four suspects were arrested of which one was shot and wounded," Sitole said.
Two handguns recovered will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in other crimes.
General Sitole said the suspects are believed to have been involved in multiple cases of people being followed from OR Tambo Airport and robbed.
