Schools sitting ducks for criminals - Gauteng Education MEC

Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, said schools in his province are becoming sitting ducks for criminals.

He was commenting after two men were killed, one wounded and two arrested when a heavily armed gang attacked and robbed the Edenvale High School on Thursday.

No learners or teachers were injured during the robbery in which the criminals brandished an AK47 rifle and handguns during a shootout with police as they fled the school. Several attackers were able to flee the scene in two cars and are now being sought by police.

Speaking to the media at the school, MEC Lesufi said security at schools has been an issue that the Department had been speaking about publicly for some time.

He said, fortunately, the school has a very good security system in place, so when the alarms were pressed their private security company arrived on the scene and well as the police from a station situated near to the school.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Captain Kay Makhubele, said three unlicensed firearms, a rifle and two pistols, were recovered from the scene.
