Helicopter deployed in search for escaped Karoo lion

The desperate search for an escaped lion in the Karoo National Park outside Beaufort West continues into the sixth day.

And, according to SANParks spokesperson, Rey Thakhuli, it is of great concern that the animal is still roaming out of the park six days on.

A helicopter brought in to the search on Wednesday will continue supporting the 14 rangers from the park and eight volunteers from neighbouring farms working in an ongoing operation to track the animal.

So far they've discovered an eland kill and a place where the lion appeared to have rested.

But, Thakhuli said the search went cold late Wednesday when the lion tracks disappeared into rough terrain which is inaccessible even with a 4x4.

Karoo Park Manager, Nico van der Walt, said it remains a huge concern for SANParks that this animal is still roaming out of the park six days later, "but the tracking team remains resolute that the lion will be successfully returned back to the park."

Furthermore, the residents of Beaufort West and surrounding areas are urged to be extra careful and not to approach the lion.

"In fact, any sighting of the lion should be reported to the police or the public can call Nico van der Walt on telephone 023 415 2828 or Cell: 082 801 2109.
