Mpumalanga police have appealed for leads on how 29-year-old Happy Sindane died.
He was found dead in Tweefontein on Monday and appeared to have been stoned to death.
Sindane rose to prominence in 2003 when he alleged that he was a white boy who had been kidnapped by black people.
After a four-month inquiry to establish his identity, the Bronkhorstspruit Children's Court ruled in September 2003 that Sindane's real name was Abbey Mziyaye.
It found that he was the son of a black domestic worker and a white man - the whereabouts of both being unknown.
