Authorities says there is a plot to kill two State witnesses who testified against three taxi bosses accused of multiple murders in a taxi war in Mpumalanga and Gauteng in the 1990s.
Correctional services department spokesman Koos Gerber says their relevant operational managers in Mpumalanga are aware of the potential threat and are managing the situation.
He said the department was working with the National Prosecuting Authority to ensure the plot did not succeed.
The NPA said the witnesses were being kept in a safe location.
Concerned taxi owners say there's a plot to kill convicted hit men Michael Grey and Kenneth Nkosi, who testified in the trial of taxi bosses Samuel "Vuyo" Manganye, Calvin Lubisi, and Mfanufikile "Mamelodi" Mbonani.
Nkosi and Grey were convicted in 1998 and 1999 and are serving sentences in Zonderwater maximum security prison.
Judgement in the trial of the taxi bosses will take place on Thursday and Friday.
