Planned protests at Eskom hearings

Civil society organisations will hold a protest on the first day of a series of public hearings on Eskom's application for a 16% a year price hike for the next three years.

The National Energy Regulator will hold its first public hearing in Cape Town on Tuesday.

The coalition of civil society organisations says they cannot allow Nersa to grant Eskom's application without a thorough review of national energy and resource plans.

Speaking on the DMB on AlgoaFM, NUMSA deputy secretary-general Karl Cloete described Eskom's application as 'ridiculous' .

"We think that what Eskom should be getting from NERSA is a single digit inflation related increase and not the kind of double digit increases that they are looking for. We think that if Eskom is allowed to do this it will worsen the economic conditions in our country but even more sadly so it will hit the poorest of the poor extremely hard" Cloete said.
