Police in Mbombela in Mpumalanga are investigating a murder after the body of an elderly man was found on his farm on Monday.
Police Spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlati says the 70-year-old Bertus Steenberg was killed in an apparent farm attack, which they suspect could have taken place on Sunday.
He says Steenberg's neighbours discovered his body on his farm in Ogies.
Brigadier Hlahti says Steenberg, who lives alone, was assaulted before being strangled to death.
The suspects robbed him of his belongings and fled the scene in his Toyota Hilux bakkie.
Hlathi says Steenburg's family became concerned when they could not get hold of him for several days and asked his neighbour to check on him.
When they arrived they found the house ransacked with the body of Steenberg tied to his other vehicle.
Police Management condemned the murder as a senseless death where a pensioner's life was heartlessly taken by greedy persons.
No arrests have been made.
