Parliament fire: Suspect in court facing 5 charges

A man from Kayhelithsa has made his first appearance in the Cape Town Magistrates Court for his alleged involvement in the fire that destroyed parts of Parliament this week.

Zandile Christmas Mafe (49) appeared in a packed courtroom on Tuesday where he was charged with two counts of arson, theft, housebreaking with the intent to steal and contravention of the explosives act as well as the destruction of essential infrastructure.

NPA Spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says the matter was postponed to the 11th of January for the State and investigators to establish whether or not Mafe has any assets and to confirm his address for possible bail application.

Mafe, who is unemployed, is being represented by well known Cape Town attorney Luvuyo Godla.

When he was led up from the holdings cells below, he was greeted by the whirr of camera drives, to the point where he removed his mask and slowly turned full circle so that everyone could get a proper look at his face.
