Parliament fire accused's bid for bail postponed

49-year old Zandile Mafe at a previous court appearance

Jacaranda FM

The Cape Town man accused of setting fire to Parliament will have to wait until 22 January for a decision on whether he will be granted bail.

The court was expected to hear an urgent bail application by Zandile Mafe’s defence team on Saturday.

However, they say they'll be returning to court on Tuesday to argue against his referral to Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital for observation.

Mafe was sent there based on a single initial observation that he may suffer from paranoid schizophrenia.

His lawyers also confirmed that he was on a hunger strike that he intended to maintain until his bail hearing happened.

He faces various charges, including arson and terrorism, for allegedly setting fire to Parliament on 2 January.
