South Africa has topped the one million COVID-19 vaccination mark, as the country works around the clock to speed up its inoculation rollout plan.
According to Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, the country has vaccinated 479 768 people under the Sisonke Programme, while at least 565 336 elderly people have received their first shot of the Pfizer jab.
Therefore, 1 045 104 individuals have already been vaccinated.
Meanwhile, the SA Medical Association says it remains concerned about the slow roll-out of the Covid19 vaccination programme.
SAMA chairperson, Dr Angelique Coetzee, says this may have an impact on the severity of the 3rd wave of the coronavirus, currently being experienced.
She says the plan was to reach five million people in Phase 2 of the roll-out but this is being hampered by a number of factors.
Dr Coetzee says these include the slow roll-out and poor adherence to non-pharmaceutical interventions.
