Western Cape authorities believe that only two crocodiles remain unaccounted for following a mass escape from a breeding farm in Bonnievale.
The Nile crocodiles escaped in March this year when they found a weak spot in the fence of one of the enclosures.
The crocodiles, ranging in size from 1.2m to 1.5m, made their way into the Breede River.
The spokesperson for the Provincial Department of Environmental Affairs, James Brent-Styan, said sadly 51 of the crocodiles had to be euthanized, while 32 were recaptured alive.
He said the crocodile facility underwent a comprehensive inspection by Cape Nature following the escape, and repair work to the enclosure has been completed.
“The investigation into the alleged transgressions of the facility owner is currently being concluded and a decision will be taken soon towards any further action against the owner,” Brent-Styan said.
He said Cape Nature would continue searching for the two crocodiles but have since scaled down their operations to one nightly river patrol per week with the help of landowners.
