Once-off payments to councillors who were not re-elected

The South African Local Government Association is calling on all former councillors who were not re-elected after last year's elections, to verify their details with their municipalities.
That's to enable government to make a once-off gratuity payment to them after they effectively lost their jobs.
Salga's acting provincial executive officer in the Eastern Cape, Mtobeli Kolisa, says the former councillors have to verify their details with their municipalities by Friday.

He says they should also complete the original confirmation of details form and provide a copy of their last pay slip.

"The purpose of all of this is that all of this information has not been confirmed in the way I have just outlined in the municipality. It will then be submitted to the department of cooperative governance to pay former councillors as per the announcement that was made by the minister of finance" Kolisa said.
