A senior South African Navy (SA Navy) officer has been formally charged after allegations of sexual assault were reported, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) said on Saturday.
"The alleged sexual assault occurred at the Naval Base Durban on Sunday, 5 July 2020.
The SA Navy has since initiated a process to administratively place the alleged perpetrator on suspension to allow for investigations to be conducted without any interference or influence," the SANDF said in a statement.
"The South African National Defence Force unswervingly supports all national efforts to fight the scourge of gender-based violence and sexual exploitation and abuse against women and children," the statement said.
The SANDF did not provide further details about the alleged offence.
