Three robbery suspects were killed in a shootout with law enforcement officials following an attempted robbery at a cargo warehouse at OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said police and private security responded to a report of nine suspects holding staff hostage at the Cargo Menzies Warehouse as they robbed the place.
He said police and the airport control room were alerted.
“Officials intercepted the suspects and a shootout ensued. Three suspects lost their lives, one is seriously wounded, and five others have been arrested,” Mbalula said.
“As the country unites to fight against the spread of COVID-19, it is clear that there remain a few criminal elements who are hell-bent on undermining the laws of the republic and putting the lives of law-abiding citizens at risk,” he said.
Mbalula thanked law enforcement officials for their prompt response and encouraged them to continue to serve and protect.
