A male teacher at Mabusabesala Secondary School in Veldevrede in Mpumalanga has been suspended for allegedly carrying a gun in his hand while invigilating grade 11 learners during an examination.
The spokesperson for the provincial education department, Jasper Zwane, said the incident occurred on Tuesday while learners were writing the tourism examination.
“The department views this incident in a serious light and has already instituted an investigation to understand the circumstances that led to this conduct,” he said.
Zwane said officials will be sent to the school on Monday to offer counselling services to the learners who may have been traumatised by the incident which was captured on a video and which went viral on social media.
He said the pupils still wrote the exam adding that the 26-year-old teacher would face an internal disciplinary hearing when the investigation into the incident has been concluded.
