The Automobile Association of South Africa said unaudited mid-month fuel price data from the Central Energy Fund is pointing to possible increases of around 25 cents a litre to the prices of petrol in April.
However, the AA said the good news is that the data is showing a decrease to the wholesale price of diesel of around 20 cents a litre, and a significant decrease to the price of illuminating paraffin of around 68 cents a litre.
Spokesperson, Layton Beard, said the weaker Rand/Dollar exchange rate is contributing to the increases in petrol prices.
However, he says in the case of diesel and illuminating paraffin, the weaker Rand is not resulting in increases in those landing prices.
Beard also cautioned that as this was based on unaudited, mid-month data, the numbers should change positively before the official adjustment is made by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy at month end.
He said another factor is that the "Rand appears to be steadying against the US Dollar," which he said should bring further relief in specifically the petrol prices.
Beard said another consideration is that fuel levies will not be increasing in April and will stay at the same rate as they did in 2022.
