Metrorail says PRASA Group Chief Executive Officer, Lucky Montana and UTATU General Secretary, Steve Harris met on Thursday to discuss interventions to ensure the safety of Metrorail employees and commuters.
This follows the tragic death of train driver, JP Du Plessis on the 25th of December.
Du Plessis was found stabbed to death in a stationary train outside Hercules station in Pretoria
Metrorail says both parties agreed that additional security measures should be put in place with immediate effect.
Harris says the new intervention measures include the introduction of mobile armed guards at identified hot spot areas, and rapid response systems to emergency situations through the contracting of helicopter services...
"Obviously the members are devastated and you cannot blame them, and this is why we had to ensure that we increase security measures to try and give them some sort of hope and positive indication that the company cares. The company has a responsibility and wants to do something, but obviously the people at this point are scared, the wives have also raised their concerns, but we are doing our utmost under the current circumstances" Harris said.
