Call for drunk drivers to be banned

The Inkatha Freedom Party has called for a lifetime ban of drunk drivers on South Africa's roads.

Party spokesperson, Velaphi Ndlovu says it is shocking to note that the festive season is not even officially over, and already 1279 people have been killed on the country's roads.

The death toll statistics were released by the Road Traffic Management Corporation on Thursday.

Ndlovu says if people were found driving under the influence of alcohol, their licences should be immediately revoked without being renewed, and should not be allowed to apply for new ones.

Meanwhile, more than 800 drunk drivers were arrested in Johannesburg during December.

Johannesburg metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar says this was higher, compared to 688 drunk drivers that were arrested during the same period in 2011.

He says metro police will continue with road blocks over the weekend, as a large number of motorists are expected to be coming from different provinces into the city.
