Consumer rights group, Consumer Fair, says the meat scandal which rocked the country recently should be escalated to a criminal matter.
Currently a three-month investigation is being conducted by the portfolio committees of health, agriculture, and trade and industry.
A study conducted by Stellenbosch university in February revealed that most of the meat sold in supermarkets contains meat other than that specified on the package.
Some of the country's top retailers have been implicated in the scandal.
Consumer Fair's Thami Bolani says criminal charges should be brought against those directly responsible for the mislabelling.
"If people are found to have broken the consumer protection law, they can be prosecuted and fined 10% of their annual turnover or pay a fine of up to R1m or even be sent to prison for not more than 10 years" Bolani said
