Researchers involved in a recent meat study, done at the University of Stellenbosch, are reluctant to continue with their work, after a media uproar regarding the incorrect labelling of meat by various popular supermarkets.
Harris Steinman, a co-author of the study, says the names of the supermarkets involved were not meant to be made public.
The study, conducted last year, found that 60% of 139 meats tested, contained ingredients that were not indicated on the labels.
Steinman says researchers are now reluctant to continue with their studies because of legal threats coming their way...
"We were trying to protect consumers by doing a study that will influence the meat in the street to do things correctly and at the same time effect the regulatory environment to ensure that food manufacturers comply with it. This forced released of names has resulted in some of our researches being very concerned about whether or not it is worth continuing research in this field" he said,
The supermarkets implicated were Shoprite, Pick 'n Pay, Spar, Fruit and Veg City's Food Lover's Market and Woolworths.
