Free State police have launched a manhunt for a heavily armed gang who blew up an ATM in Tumahole in Parys.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli said they responded to the scene at around 02.00 and were met by gunfire from the suspects.
During the exchange, a suspect believed to be in his twenties, was fatally wounded, while a security vehicle was riddled with bullet holes.
"It is alleged that about 12 heavily armed suspects were spotted at the scene after the explosion. The suspects managed to take the money and fled the scene on foot.
"It was also discovered that a male bystander was shot and wounded in the foot during the shootout," Kareli said.
Tumahole police have opened cases of murder and attempted.
