The murder case of Pastor Liezel de Jager has taken an unexpected turn with the news that her murder-accused husband has died.
Werner de Jager died in a hospital in Kwazulu-Natal on Monday afternoon.
He has been charged with the murder of his wife at the couple's home in Amanzimtoti nearly two years ago.
Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Thulani Mdluli on Monday confirmed Werner's death.
Mdluli said Werner, who was detained at the Westville Prison in Kwazulu-Natal, died in an external hospital.
"Werner was admitted to an external health facility on 5 April due to medical complications," Mdluli added.
Though Mdluli did not divulge the cause of Werner's death, it is understood that he had taken his own life.
Werner has been in custody since November last year for his wife's murder.
Since his bail was denied, he has appeared in court several times.
