KZN soccer World Cup fraud and corruption case back on track

File

A date has been set for a pretrial conference in the long-running fraud and corruption trial of former KZN top cops and businessman, Toshan Panday.

The nine accused include former KZN police commissioner, General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, Colonel Navin Madhoe, and former police captain Aswin Narainpershad.

The other accused include Panday's wife, mother, sister, brother-in-law, and personal assistant.

They face 275 counts of racketeering, fraud and corruption, money laundering, and forgery allegedly committed between March 2009 and April 2010 involving an amount of R47 million.

The state alleges that the accused had allegedly ignored the prescripts of the Public Finance Management Act concerning the procurement of accommodation for SAPS members during the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa.

Henry Mamothame of the NPA’s Investigative Directorate said the matter was postponed to 25 July for “pre-trial conferencing.”

He said the state alleges Panday’s family acted with a common purpose with Toshan Panday and others to defraud the SAPS through their association with entities that were used to secure lucrative contracts from the SAPS.

The policemen are accused of colluding with Panday who allegedly received the contracts.

Mamothame said judgment in an application for disclosure of certain information has been reserved.
