A 40-year-old Malaysian national is due to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates' Court on Thursday after being busted with 11 rhino horns at OR Tambo International Airport.
Hawks provincial spokesperson, Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu, said the man was arrested on Monday under the NEMBA Act, as he was preparing to board a Qatar Airways flight to Malaysia.
She said airport authorities discovered suspicious objects in his luggage at a check-in point.
"Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Germiston responded to the crime scene. Upon arrival police discovered five rhino horns wrapped in a foil, concealed in sweets and green tea boxes," she said.
Mulamu said further investigation led authorities to the plane where the suspect's second luggage was dispatched, and where they discovered six more rhino horns.
"The suspect was immediately arrested and charged. The investigation continues, and more charges cannot be ruled out," she said.
