The National Sea Rescue Institute in Port Nolloth towed one of their sea rescue crafts to the Orange River to assist two animal welfare organizations to save trapped horses.
Spokesperson Craig Lambinon says the wild horses were all scattered in groups on different islands with some reportedly tethered.
He says on arrival on the scene our sea rescue craft, accompanied by members of "Have a Heart" and "Network for Animals" was launched.
Four Namibians, Jacques and Mark Kemp, Mauricio Smit and Dewald van Jaarsveld, launched their two private boats from the Namibian side of the river, to help to assist in the operation.
Lambinon says as more islands became flooded, the horses were forced to swim to the next island, and in some cases, the horses were chest-deep in the water.
He says it was an intense rescue operation where a total of 35 horses were assisted to safety.
