Jacaranda FM

The case against the man accused of setting the Parliament on fire has been postponed for a month.

Forty-nine-year-old Zandile Mafe appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he is facing several charges including two counts of arson, theft, housebreaking with the intent to steal and contravention of the explosives act and destruction of essential infrastructure.

Another charge of terrorism, which is a scheduled 6 offence, has also been added to his charge sheet.

The court heard this morning that Mafe has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and will now be committed to a mental institution for observation over the next 30 days.

Mafe, who is unemployed, is being represented by well known Cape Town attorney Luvuyo Godla and well-known Advocate Dali Mpofu has joined the legal team.

The accused was unrecognisable in court on Tuesday, he was clean-shaven and wearing a suit.

He will be back in court on the 11th of February.

According to Advocate Mpofu, his client has embarked on a hunger strike.
