A man travelling to the Eastern Cape was wounded when gunmen attempting to blow up an ATM at a Bloemfontein service station, opened fire on three men while they slept in their car.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Covane, says the incident happened early on Tuesday morning in OR Tambo Road after the men stopped at the petrol station to rest while travelling from Gauteng to the Eastern Cape.
He says a gunman, in the company of a large group of accomplices, confronted the sleeping men and opened fire, wounding a 34-year-old man in the upper body.
Covane says as the driver sped away, more shots were fired at the car while a loud explosion was also heard.
He says the gang, numbering around 10, fled empty-handed when private security officers responded to the alarm.
Covane says the wounded man was taken to hospital for treatment.
