A man who killed a woman with his car while fleeing from traffic authorities in Middelburg in Mpumalanga has been sentenced to prison.
During the accident, that took place in March of 2019, Visagie pushed her then minor daughter out of the way of Malinga's vehicle when she got struck.
Visagie's leg was severed during the incident and she died on the way to the hospital.
The case was taken over by Afriforum's Private Prosecution Unit after they wrote to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the police regarding the lack of prosecution.
The NPA initially withdrew the charges due to an outstanding blood alcohol report.
Afriforum Prosecutor Wico Swanepoel says Malinga pleaded guilty and was sentenced in the Middelburg Regional Court on Monday to an effective five years in prison.
His license has also been suspended for 12 months.
The Middelburg Observer, who first reported on the accident, quoted eyewitnesses at the scene, who said that a fleeing BMW with two occupants struck an SUV in the crossing at a busy intersection.
Both cars lost control, spun and struck Visagie who was crossing the street with her daughter.
