Two prisoners who escaped from the Leeuwkop Correctional facility on Thursday was re-arrested on the same day after a dramatic crime spree that included the kidnapping of a baby.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo says shortly after escaping the duo broke into a house in Fourways where they threatened a woman and her domestic worker with a knife before kidnapping her infant and fleeing on foot.
He says they then proceeded to hijack a Toyota double cab near Helderfontein school and drove towards Diepsloot.
Officers from the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JPMD) on patrol spotted the vehicle driving at high speed and gave chase.
The car subsequently drove into a ditch and when officers arrived the community had already rescued the infant and apprehended the escapees.
The escapees who are both serving time for murder will now face additional charges of escaping, house robbery, kidnapping and reckless and negligent driving.
