The Covid-19 death toll continues to increase with the number of fatalities now exceeding 84 000.
There were a further 253 new Covid-related deaths in the last 24-hour reporting period, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country to 84 152.
The National Institute for Communicable diseases says although new infections continue to show a sustained decrease, new cases recorded in just one day still stand at 7 338.
This represents a 13.3% positivity rate.
KwaZulu-Natal continues to have the highest number of new infections at 26% of new cases, followed by the Western Cape at 22% and the Eastern Cape at 17%.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation soon following a meeting with the National Coronavirus Command Council earlier this week.
The National State of Disaster was last week extended to the 15th of October 2021.
