Eskom says a fire ripped through a part of its Kendal Power station in Mpumalanga in the early hours of Saturday morning, damaging one of the units.
The power utility says this was due to the failure of a generator transformer.
It says the fire damaged the cables to the main cooling water system, and Units 2 and 3 experienced loss of vacuum and were shut down under a controlled condition.
Nobody was injured and staff members were safely evacuated.
An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire.
Eskom still has to assess the impact of the damage on the national power grid.
It says the unit will return to service sometime during next week.
