Latest on Oscar Pistorius shooting incident

Paralimpian Oscar Pistorius is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court later on Thursday following the fatal shooting of a woman in his home.

Police spokesperson, lieutenant colonel Katlego Mogale, would only confirm that a 26-year-old suspect will be appearing in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court this afternoon following a shooting at Pistorius' house.

Mogale said the woman's name could only be released once her next of kin had been informed.

"In the early hours of this morning police were alerted to a shooting incident in Silver Lakes and upon our arrival they found the paramedics busy with the woman. The declared her dead on the scene. Police investigated and found a 9mm pistol on the scene and a 26 year old man has been taken into custody" Mogale said.

The woman has since been identified as 30-year-old Reeva Steenkamp, formerly from Port Elizabeth.

She was also a Miss PE Finalist in 2005.

Our correspondent in Pretoria spoke to an official, who prefers to remain anonymous, who was inside the house after the shooting.

"The lady was shot upstairs in her room and was carried down by Oscar where the paramedics found her. There was quite a lot of blood upstairs" he said.
