A 24-year-old man is due to appear in court on Friday for torching a house in Kwa Nuyswa which led to the death of a 22-month old child.
Police said the suspect, who is known to the family, entered the home on Monday armed with a can of petrol.
He poured it over the inside of the house in Ezinqoleni, near Port Shepstone, where a woman and her granddaughter were sitting with her family.
“He locked the house with the victims inside and set the room alight. However they managed to escape with injuries,” said police spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu.
“The 22-month-old granddaughter later passed away in hospital due to burn wounds that were sustained.”
“The 24-year-old suspect handed himself over to the police on the same day,” Mulamu said.
