KZN disaster teams on standby for cyclone Irina

KwaZulu-Natal disaster management teams have been placed on high alert, for expected severe weather to hit the northern part of  the province this weekend.

Disaster management teams in Durban, some 400km south of Maputo in Mozambique, where cyclone Irina is expected to make landfall, are also on standby.

Co-operative governance MEC, Nomusa Dube says disaster teams will liaise with municipalities across the province.

The SA Weather Service earlier warned that the storm system would dump an "extreme" amount of rain on the region over the next two to three days.

Spokesperson, Hannelee Doubell says areas around Kosi Bay, St Lucia, and Richard's Bay can expect up to 400mm of rain over this period,.

However, the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center says it predicts Irina will make landfall further south tomorrow.
