Sixty-five people arrested as alleged instigators of the July 2021 unrest in Kwazulu Natal will now face terrorism charges.
This was announced by the National Prosecuting Authority during another court appearance of the group in Durban on Friday.
They currently face charges that include conspiracy to commit public violence and incitement to commit arson.
The NPA's KZN spokesperson, Natasha Kara, said the state requested a further remand on Friday, advising the court that it will bring additional charges of terrorism against the accused.
"In order for the state to do this we require the authorisation of the National Director of Public Prosecutions. The court granted the adjournment and the matter adjourned to 17 November," Ramkisson Kara said.
She added that the state had given the court the undertaking that at the next court appearance, indictments will be served on the accused in the matter.
