The Department of Justice and Correctional Services has confirmed that an inmate has been arrested for the murder of a female official at Leeuwkop prison in Johannesburg.
The arrest was announced in a statement on Friday, following a visit to the prison by the Deputy Minister, Nkosi Phathekile Holomisa.
The female Correctional officer was also identified as 50-year-old Eunice Moloko.
Her body was found on Wednesday on the floor of the Covid19 isolation unit, with her jacket covered in blood. The cause of death has not yet been released.
According to the statement, the inmate has already been charged with murder by the police.
Nkosi Holomisa said the circumstances that led to Moloko’s death must be fully investigated.
He said should investigations reveal that there was negligence on the part of management in the centre, the department will not hesitate to take tough action against anyone implicated.
“We appeal to people to allow the law to take its course and avoid speculations and apportioning blame without facts,” he said.
