Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has warned that South Africa country could face a possible third wave of Covid-19.

Dr Mkhize addressed a dialogue on the impact of the coronavirus on Thursday night and added that the anticipated third wave could be more devastating than the first and second waves.

He said it was clear that countries with more resources have a better chance of being able to respond than most countries on the African continent.

Dr Mkhize said only about seven countries in Africa can afford to self-finance the procurement of Covid-19 vaccines for their citizens and that the rest have to rely on support through the COVAX initiative.

South Africa has been the country that has been the hardest hit on the continent with more than 1.4 million people affected by the deadly virus.

The country has now breached the 45 000 mark in related deaths.

The death toll as on Thursday stands at 45 605.
