The Hawks have taken over an investigation in Stilfontein after the arrest of a suspect led to the discovery of amalgam (a mixture of two or more metals), to the value of R3 million.
A 45-year-old man is expected to appear in the Stilfontein Magistrates Court in North West on Thursday following his arrest by the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Illicit Mining Team who stopped his vehicle on the N12 as he was exiting a local game farm.
Police Spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone says the suspect was found in possession of amalgam valued at R164 000.
A search was then carried out at his house where 28 gold nuggets worth R58 000 and various other metals and scales were found.
Police also found food and beer on the premises and believe that he was supplying illegal miners with foodstuffs at one of the mine shafts in Stilfontein.
Brigadier Mokgwabone says the Hawks were called in and a search was conducted at a mine shaft where amalgam and mining equipment was found.
The investigation continues.
