South Africa stays on Alert Level 1, but President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a few tweaks to some restrictions for the Easter long weekend.
Addressing the nation on Tuesday night, the President said given the relatively low transmission levels, Cabinet decided to keep the country on coronavirus Alert Level1.
However, he said due to the specific circumstances of this period, a few adjustments were necessary.
Ramaphosa said the “the sale of alcohol for off-site consumption will be prohibited this coming Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday."
However, on-site sales at restaurants, shebeens, and bars will be allowed, according to licensing conditions, up until 23:00.
The other changes were to social and religious gatherings.
"Following this consultation, it has been determined that religious gatherings over this period will be restricted to a total number of 250 people indoors and 500 outdoors," he said.
He said as before, where the venue is too small to accommodate these numbers with appropriate social distancing, then no more than 50 percent of the capacity of the venue may be used.
President Ramaphosa said Cabinet would review these measures on the size of gatherings within the next 15 days based on an assessment of the state of the pandemic and the extent of compliance with health protocols.
The curfew time remains the same, from midnight to 4 am.
Public recreational spaces such as beaches, parks, and dams will remain open.
However, this will continue to be subject to strict health protocols, such as social distancing, mask-wearing.
