Half of Durban in the dark following sub-station explosion

The eThekweni Municipality says an explosion at the 275kv Klaarwater major substation caused widespread power outages to about 50% of the areas in Durban.

In a post on Facebook, the Municipality said areas affected and were still without power by 9 PM on Tuesday, included the Northern, Western and Southern regions of the City.

The Municipality urged residents to switch off unnecessary loads like air conditioners and geysers but did not say when power would be restored.

The explosion was trending on Twitter with videos showing a massive explosion, and then the City being plunged into darkness.

DA MP, Dean Macpherson, said in a tweet that the “city is falling apart before our eyes” adding that the outage would not be resolved quickly.

Another Twitter user blamed the governing party, saying Durban is finished under the ANC.
