Around 500 inmates from Groenpunt prison outside Deneysville in the Free State will be moved to other correctional service centres.
Correctional services' Grace Molatedi says some 350 prisoners have been moved so far and the rest will be transported to different facilities on Friday.
All those who are being relocated, are serving maximum sentences.
The move comes after prisoners went on the rampage on Monday.
They vandalised and torched cells and the facility's offices.
Four warders and 50 inmates were injured in the unrest.
