A Grade 1 learner who just started her school career has died, allegedly after consuming food from a local spaza shop.
The spokesperson for the Department of Education in Gauteng Steve Mabona says the learner from Mandletu Primary School in Brakpan bought biscuits on Tuesday.
He says shortly before break time at 11 am, she experienced health complications and started vomiting.
The child's parents and emergency services were contacted immediately, but sadly, the learner was certified dead by paramedics upon arrival.
Last year at least 8 children died in different provinces after allegedly consuming goods from Spaza shops.
This led to a massive crackdown against foreign-owned shops and warnings issued to parents to be vigilant concerning the edible goods that their children consume.
The learner's name was not divulged and trauma counselling will be provided to the school on Wednesday.
