Kwazulu Natal police launched a manhunt for the gunmen who shot and killed an IFP local government councillor and two schoolchildren in the Nongoma area on Wednesday.
National police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola has deployed the national task team responsible for investigating political killings to the area.
She said the deceased, a councillor from the Nongoma Local Municipality, was killed on the R618 in Nongoma while attending to a vehicle breakdown.
Mathe said a group of gunmen stopped next to his vehicle and opened fire, killing the councillor.
She said the suspects then opened fire on a passing taxi transporting school children.
"Four children were shot and wounded, and two of them aged 11 and 12 years old sadly succumbed to their injuries," she said.
General Masemola has assured the community of Nongoma that police are working around the clock, to trace and apprehend those behind this attack.
