Government launches vehicles emission's programme this week

Environmental Affairs Minister, Edna Molewa, will launch her department's Zero Emission Electric Vehicle Programme on Tuesday.

The Department says the introduction of the programme is a ground breaking pioneering initiative for the South African automobile market.

Also referred to as the Department of Environmental Affairs Green cars, the programme seeks to ensure that South Africa contributes practically to the reduction of environmentally harmful gases, by promoting the use of cleaner sources of fuel by the automotive industry.

Department spokesperson, Albie Modise, says the programme is a partnership with Nissan South Africa which has launched a full electric vehicle.

"This feeds more into our own programme as government of ensuring that South Africa's transition towards lower carbon economy realise and recognises the fact that we need to cut on our carbon emission to ensure that we use renewable energy, and this particular vehicle does not use petrol or diesel. It uses energy from the sun" Modise said.
