Police say the 16-month-old girl and her mother were attacked by the animal at Kuleni game farm in Hluhluwe on Wednesday.
It's understood they had been walking to the main house on the property.
The mother is recovering in hospital after suffering serious injuries.
Carina Crayton from the Wild Heart Wildlife Foundation says the woman is a highly qualified conservation guide at the reserve.
“She wouldn’t have taken a risk, so there you can assume the animal had some kind of problem. When their instinct kicks in, it’s usually to protect their babies or protect their territory, if it’s a male or that sort of thing. They can kill a human.”
