Gift of Givers hands over borehole project in Makhanda

The first of a three plan exploratory borehole project capable of supplying up to 400 000 litres of water per day to Rhodes University in Makhanda was officially handed over at the weekend.

Gift of the Givers spokesperson, Imtiaz Sooliman, says the plan to supply water for drinking, washing and cleaning through borehole water will assist in alleviating the town 's water crises.

He says the second borehole which will be launched later this week is expected to yield 250 000 litres of water per day.

The third borehole will feed into the middle and lower reservoirs of the Waainek Water Works which is virtually empty at just one per cent of capacity.

Sooliman says surplus water will then be housed in JoJo tanks at the periphery of the university and will supply not only students at Rhodes but the community at large.
