Gauteng schools rocked by deadly shooting and stabbing incidents

An alleged intruder at a Gauteng school was shot dead after the unknown man forced his way into the school and allegedly stabbed a teacher.

The Gauteng Education Department said the deadly shooting incident took place on Friday at the Kagiso Senior Secondary School in Krugersdorp.

Provincial education department spokesperson Steve Mabona said it’s alleged the man gained access to the school through the main gate when it was remotely opened for a car to drive in.

He said the patroller responsible for manning the gate tried to stop him but he did not cooperate.

“He proceeded to the admin block and hysterically demanded to see the principal.

He was told that the principal was in a meeting and therefore would not see him at that time,” said Mabona.

“He allegedly drew a knife and stabbed a teacher in the hand.

Subsequently, another teacher allegedly fatally shot him," Mabona said.

He added that pupils were gathered in the school hall and addressed about the incident.

Mabona said the department’s psycho-social unit would be sent to the school on Monday.

The shooting incident came after the death of a learner who was stabbed on Thursday at Geluksdal Senior Secondary School in Brakpan.

In another incident earlier in the week and also in Krugersdorp, a grade 10 learner was suspended after he was caught on camera assaulting a female learner.

That incident took place on Tuesday at the Nic Diederichs High School.
