Gauteng Pastor to appear in court for fraud

A 29-year-old pastor accused of masterminding a R2million investment scam is expected to appear before the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Johannesburg on Friday.

A pastor accused of masterminding a R2 million investment scam is expected to appear before the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old Tumelo Christopher Mukheti made his first court appearance in March.

It is alleged that Mukheti, between 2017 and 2018, lured members of his congregation in Kliptown, Soweto, to invest a non-refundable R1 500 each into his investment scheme, Yahwe.

He allegedly promised that the investment would yield a 14% interest return.

The investors reported the scam to the police following failed attempts to withdraw their dividends. They also realised that the Yahwe Investment Scheme offices had abruptly closed its operations and that the accused had disappeared with the funds.

Mukheti was arrested at the Kopfontein Port of Entry on his arrival from Lesotho in March after he was flagged by authorities.

He is currently out on R3000 bail.

The case, however, might be postponed due to COVID 19 regulations.
